Heartland Chapter ASHI - Winter Newsletter

Needed - A Few Good Men ...
By: Fred Comb

Chapter News:
Did you know the ASHI Heartland Chapter has an Upcoming Events page on the website?  Please go to this page for up to the minute information about new events as well as any last minute changes to events.  Add Upcoming Events to your favorites.

Are you able to volunteer a little of your time as a chapter leader?  If so, the chapter can really use your help and there are a few current board members who would like to turn over their board position to other members.  If you are interested in helping the chapter organize and present continuing ed meetings and seminars, please contact a current board member and let them know of your interest.  Thanks!

The Heartland Chapter ASHI - Annual Meeting will be held in conjunction with the February 17, 2011 seminar, see below.  The annual meeting will take place at the beginning of the seminar so don't be late.  If there are multiple members running for a board position we may have an election at the annual meeting, so please be prepared.  Watch the Upcoming Events page for new information as it develops.

National News:
By now, you should be aware that ASHI members approved new professional Standard of Practice for Residential Swimming Pools and Spas as well as Residential Predrywall Inspections.  Log into www.ashi.org to view the new SoP.

Are you looking for an excuse to get out of the cold Minnesota weather?  If so, consider attending InspectionWorld Atlanta  on January 25-28.  Atlanta is a fun town, and there's a good chance the weather will be warmer.  Enjoy!

Got an idea for continuing education or meeting topic?  Please send me an e-mail

Tuesday, January 18, 2011, 6:30-9:00 PM
Michael Klutho, attorney

Davannis Restaurant - private dining room
41 Cleveland Ave So
St. Paul, MN 55105
651-690-4848
(SW corner of Cleveland and Grand)

Program:
The purpose of this seminar is to learn about various legal issues that relate to the home inspection business and what you can do to help protect yourself from potential lawsuits.

Our speaker, Mr, Michael Klutho is a partner in the 50 attorney law firm of BassfordRemele PA.  However, long before arriving at the Bassford law firm, Michael put himself through college working as a carpenter and as a laborer with the Public Works Department pouring concrete and the like.  And, once he completed both a Bachelors and Masters degree, Michael worked as a Fisheries Biologist for the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.  This background has provided Michael with helpful insights into construction law claims.  Michael enjoys exploring the technical nature of construction claims, including home"inspection" claims.  His experience in analyzing data as a Biologist has also proved very useful in analyzing the myriad of details surrounding many construction related claims and lawsuits.  Michael's practice today emphasizes the representation of a variety of other professionals facing liability claims, as well as providing pre-suit risk management advice to assist other professionals on how to avoid or lower risk of claims in the first place.

Mr. Klutho will talk about:

  • Pre-inspection Agreements
  • Who should sign
  • Limit of liability
  • How to recognize a potential legal issue
  • How to handle a customer complaint
  • When to contact an attorney
  • Record keeping
  • Q&A
  • and much more

Annual Meeting

Professionalism, Customer Service and Cultural Differences
- What You Need To Know To Survive In The Home Inspection Business

Davannis Restaurant - private dining room
41 Cleveland Ave So
St. Paul, MN 55105
651-690-4848
(SW corner of Cleveland and Grand)

Program:
Durring the annual meeting portion, the chapter president will take a few minutes to talk a little about the past and what we're planning for the near future.  If we have multiple members nominated for board positions, please anticipate an election at this meeting.  You will need to be a paid Heartland Chapter member to vote on chapter matters.

Professionalism means different things to different people.  We'll examine a few areas as they relate to the inspection business and you can decide for yourself what you think is important.  For instance:

  • Do you answer your phone or does it go to voice mail?
  • What do you do when the potential client on the phone says, "the other inspector is $50 cheaper than you."
  • Do you spell check?
  • Do you review, reread and revise your report before sending?
  • Should I take off my shoes before entering?
  • Do you write email the same as text?
  • Do's and Don't of handling a complaint.

The Twin Cities is home to many cultures.  As inspectors, we often don't know much about our clients until we are face to face, so it's important to have a basic understanding of our cultural differences.  Topics will include:

  • Language barriers.
  • Does religion matter?
  • Are tattoo's scary?
  • Did you know Minneapolis is home to more Hmong, Tibetan and Somali families than anywhere else in North America?
  • Did you know about 15% of the Mpls population is GLBT?
  • What is GLBT?
  • What should I do before entering a Japanese household?
  • Is it OK to discuss inspection findings with the Realtor of an Asian client?
  • Is it normal for a client to not look you in the eye?

We'll examine these questions and more as time allows.

Our speaker, Mr. Fred Comb, is an ASHI Certified Inspector and owner of Home Inspections of Minnesota.  Fred has been inspecting homes for more than 20 years and has experience working with many diverse communities.
